Meet Dr. Robyn McElwee
Robyn McElwee is a board-certified Speech Language Pathologist and has been an active member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association for 31 years. She holds a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology and a Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and Psychology from Towson State University.
Robyn started her career in an acute rehabilitation hospital, specializing in traumatic brain injury, tracheostomy/ventilator care, and cognitive/communication rehabilitation. She received additional clinical training in utilizing Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow (FEES) for dysphasia management, in which diet modification and nutrition are an essential part of the healing process.
After 31 years of providing service for people with acute, subacute, and chronic healthcare needs, Robyn found herself on her own healthcare journey.
On October 29, 2016, Robyn was cycling with a group of triathletes training for an Iron Man. She was struck by a pickup truck that crossed the median strip. As a result, she suffered a left lateral tibial plateau compression fracture requiring surgical intervention.
The accident crushed Robyn’s tibial plateau which had to be rebuilt with cadaver parts. The orthopedic surgeon, primary care physician, and rehabilitation specialist all told her that she would never be able to participate in triathlons again.
Robyn went through the standard medical care for rehabilitation, and the outcome was less than optimal for her desired quality of life. She was still struggling with pain, fatigue, limited range of motion, and reduced overall vitality were daily struggles.
The health care system had no answers for her other than she would have to live with her condition for the rest of her life. She was told by a medical team member, “After all, you are over 50. Statistically, the odds of you returning to full recovery are stacked against you and likely impossible for the type of injuries you acquired.”
Determined to overcome her injuries, Robyn began a search for answers to improve her function and lifestyle. This journey led her to research alternative methods of healing. A colleague introduced her to a technique called Nutrition Response Testing®, which is a non-invasive system of analyzing the body to determine the underlying causes of ill or non-optimal health. Robyn initially tested for food sensitivities, digestion, assimilation challenges, immune challenges, and hormone imbalance.
Her active reflex points included the posterior pituitary, adrenal, sigmoid, gallbladder, pancreas, and sinuses. It was obvious to Robyn that her body was over-stressed and overworked trying to resolve multiple health issues, some chronic in nature. The car accident and trauma seem to push her body over the edge.
Robyn followed through faithfully on the dietary recommendations, and she stuck with the program long enough to achieve correction of the underlying causes of her problems. After 20 months of care, she completed a full Iron Man on September 21, 2019, finishing in the top 20% of finishers in her age group (50 to 54)!
Robyn’s experience changed her life and way of thinking to the point that she is pursuing her doctorate dissertation in Integrative Natural Medicine at Quantum University in Hawaii. She is a Board-Certified Holistic Health Care Practitioner and an American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP) member.
Robyn has such passion and desire to see other people achieve the same goals that she achieved through alternative methods that get to the root cause of the problem.
Nutrition Response Testing has significantly impacted Robyn’s life, so she pursued professional-level training and certification. As a Certified Nutrition Response Testing Practitioner, Robyn is committed to serving her community to overcome previous obstacles that may have prevented them from achieving optimal health.
